Directions for use: auto-injector pen
This fact sheet provides only a summary of key points for injecting the medication safely. You should receive more detailed information from your health care provider.
This procedure may be used to inject yourself or a loved one.

- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- Prepare your supplies: the auto-injector pen, an alcohol swab, and a needle if necessary.
- Check the appearance of the liquid in the pen. Make sure that it matches the manufacturer's description.

- The medication must be injected under the skin (subcutaneous injection). Do not inject it into a vein or muscle.
- The best place to administer the injection is generally the thighs or abdomen. Your health care provider can help you determine which injection site to use. If administering into the abdomen, inject the pen at least 5 cm from the navel. The upper arm is also an option if someone else is administering the injection. Each new injection should be given at least 2.5 cm from the last injection sites.
- Prepare your auto-injector pen according to the instructions you were given.

- Clean the skin at the injection site with soap and water. If using an alcohol swab, allow the alcohol to dry before administering the injection.
- Place the pen at a 90-degree angle against the injection site.
- Insert the needle into the skin. Do not cover the dose counter with your fingers; this could interrupt the injection.
- Remove the auto-injector pen and let go of the skin. If you see a bit of blood, press a cotton ball to the injection site.
- Dispose of all supplies in a safe container after use.
