Amsler Grid
The Amsler grid is used for the detection and monitoring of macular degeneration. This eye disease, often caused by aging, is the leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. The Amsler test is not a substitute for an eye exam. It is recommended that people between 40 and 64 years old go for an eye examination at least once every two years, and annually for those aged 65 and older.
How to use the grid
If you wear glasses or contact lenses, keep them on to perform the test. Make sure you are in an area with properly lit.
- The grid should be at a comfortable reading distance (about 30 to 40 cm). If you wear bifocal lenses, position yourself to be able to see the grid.
- Cover one eye with your hand and look at the point in the centre of the grid.
- While looking at the central point, check if you can see the entire grid, if the lines are straight and if the squares are all the same size.
- Repeat the steps for the other eye.

Results
When you were looking at the grid, were there any:
- darker or blurry areas?
- wavy or distorted lines?
- blank spots or dots in the grid?
- any irregular figure (generally speaking)?
