Healthy Weight
Everyone worries about their weight at one point or another in their life, whether for esthetic, beauty or health reasons. There is a simple way to know if your weight is a healthy weight: BMI (Body Mass Index). To find out your BMI, divide your weight (kg) by your height squared (m2).BMI = weight (kg) / height squared (m2)
If your BMI is between 20 and 24, you are at a healthy weight.
If your BMI is < 17, you are considered thin.
If your BMI is > 27, you have excess weight that could be harmful to your health.
BMI is a quick way to estimate your weight. However, BMI can be misleading for some people (muscular people, pregnant women). It is an indicator, not an absolute parameter.
How to Lose Weight
The best way to lose weight and to keep it off is to change your lifestyle and exercise regularly.
• Follow Canada’s Food Guide.• Drink 8 glasses of water per day.
• Eat more slowly.
• Don’t skip meals.
• Avoid alcohol.
• Eat at regular hours.
• Choose a physical activity that you enjoy.
• Exercise 3 times a week, starting with 20 to 30 minutes and increasing gradually.
• Alternate stretching, endurance and strength exercises.
Be wary of quick diets: the results don’t last. You should lose no more than 0.5 to 1 kg per week.
Seek support from those around you or from a health professional.
